Significance of High-Accuracy NTC Chip for Temperature Control of IPM Module

The IPM module features high operational reliability, powerful functions, self-diagnostic and protection capabilities, thus which is attracting the attention of electronic semiconductor manufacturers. The IPM module has multiple built-in power devices, which has very high heat dissipation requirements, so it needs to rely on NTC chip for over-temperature protection and temperature control to ensure that the IPM module can operate stably at the appropriate temperature.

To ensure the accuracy of temperature monitoring, the NTC chip needs to be installed close to the IPM module heat source. Normally, the lower surface of the NTC is soldered to the insulating substrate of the IPM module, and the upper surface is electrically connected to the protection circuit by wire bonding. This enables real-time perception of IPM junction temperature, rather than just measuring ambient or housing temperature. During the operation of the IPM module, when the temperature of the insulating substrate changes, the resistance value of the NTC chip will also change accordingly. Once the measured temperature exceeds the preset temperature threshold, the protection circuit will respond immediately and quickly turn off the gate drive signal. The shutdown of the gate drive signal causes the IGBT in the IPM module to stop working, thereby preventing the current from continuing to flow in and avoiding further damage to the IPM module due to excessive temperature. When the temperature gradually decreases and returns to the safe range, the protection circuit will restore the gate drive signal, so that the IGBT can resume normal operation and ensure that the IPM module can work smoothly. Therefore, without the assistance of NTC chip, it will be difficult for IPM module to achieve accurate temperature monitoring, and its reliability advantage will be greatly reduced.
