Application of IGBT Module in New Energy Automobile

Among them, IGBT, the core component of electronic control system, has the characteristics of high input impedance, speed-sensitive switch and low conduction loss, takes on an extremely important role in high-voltage system.


IGBT module as the core high-voltage control switch assembly, its cost accounts for about 40% of the cost of the motor controller, IGBT devices account for about 10% of the total cost of new energy automobile and about 20% of the cost of charging piles. In new energy automobile, IGBT is mainly used in battery management system, motor control system, electric air conditioning control system, charging system and so on. In the main inverter, IGBT converts the DC of the high-voltage battery into the AC that drives the three-phase motor; In the on-board charger (OBC), IGBT participates in the conversion of 220V AC to DC and charges the high-voltage battery; In addition, IGBT is widely used in DC/DC converters, electric air conditioning compressors and other systems. In addition to pure electric automobile, IGBT is required for the high-voltage system independent of the low-voltage system in plug-in hybrid automobile, and a small amount of IGBT is also required for some fuel automobile equipped with 48V hybrid system, such as the control module in BSG.


IGBT downstream applications are mainly divided according to the operating voltage, the IGBT voltage for electric automobile is located in the range of 650 to 1200V. The operating voltage of home appliances, industrial installation and other fields is the lowest at 650V, the voltage of IGBT of new energy automobile is relatively centered, generally 650V and 1200V levels, and the operating voltage of photovoltaics, industrial motors, G-series high-speed train and smart grids is higher, above 1700V.


For new energy automobile, voltage level, power level, limit working condition, reliability, service life and cost all put forward high requirements for the IGBT module, but also a great challenge. The encapsulating technology of IGBT is the key link to realize the high temperature operation, high reliability and high power density of the motor controller, which involves the chip surface interconnect, chip interconnect, conductive terminal lead interconnect and other related processes. At present, the research on IGBT module encapsulating mainly focuses on the optimization of new interconnect materials, interconnect modes and other related process parameters, mainly to enhance the cooling capacity of the module, reduce the volume, and improve the reliability.
